Who do you think you are?

Who do you think you are?

This blog is based on the genealogy documentary series where celebrities research their family tree, often with surprising and unexpected results.

I am not a celebrity but I was intrigued as to whether I could trace my family back to Queen Victoria or Napoleon, two people whom I have an interest in.  To my surprise I was able to "join the dots" and both Queen Victoria and Napoleon Bonaparte are now on my Family Tree Maker which is a Family History Software I use for recording my family tree.

Their eldest son Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (23 June 1894 - 28 May 1972) succeeded his father King George V to the Throne on 20 January 1936, but on 11 December 1936 King Edward VIII abdicated. He was in love with an American woman, Wallis Simpson who was divorced and pursuing to divorce her second husband. Edward was given the title of His Royal Highness, the Duke of Windsor following his abdication and he married Wallis Simpson nee Warfield on 3 June 1937 at the age of 43.  They remained married until his death 35 years later in 1972 in Paris.

King George VI 1895 - 1952

Queen Elizabeth 1900 - 2002

Prior to 1917, the members of the British Royal Family did not have a surname, but they were members of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. King George VI was born in 1895 as a member of the House of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha.  On 17 July 1917 King George V announced that he and his family would become the House of Windsor and Windsor would become the surname of his family.  The reason for this move was because England had major feelings of discontent against Germany due to W.W.1.

Their daughter Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor (born 21 April 1926) married Philip Mountbatten, Prince of Greece and Denmark (born 10 June 1921) on 20 November 1947.
Queen Elizabeth II was Crowned on 2 June 1953.

It has been an interesting exercise to discover my ancestors back to Queen Victoria and Napoleon.
Why - just for the fun of it!  Not a direct line, but never-the less I was able to find a connection which I felt was quite an achivement.  I just wanted to share it with you!

Can I suggest you go to my Olney Family Archives Blog and start reading from the Arthur and Doris Olney Post to learn about why our family is so connected to Napoleon and his exile on St Helena.
